Game 1: The Mattseals entered this game with an 0-10 record and they were looking to turn their luck around. The Seals wasted no time in jumping out to an early lead. Chris Paquin got the scoring started in the first inning with a 2 run homer. After that, King Friday pitcher Tristan Birotte struggled to find the strike zone and walked the next 2 batters. These proved costly because a single by Adam Cosby loaded the bases and Jason Matt came through with his first RBI of the season. Three more RBI's were put up by Greg Franzen, Mike Myers, and Adam Cosby, all in the first inning. Arvie Coffman for King Friday got the only hit for his team this game. He also showed patience at the plate, along with his son Anthony Coffman by combining for 3 walks. Chris Paquin pitched a good game on the mound and held King Friday scoreless as the Mattseals finally got into the win column for the first time this season with a 6-0 victory.

Game 2: The Mattseals were riding high after their first win of the season and they again wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard early. King Friday pitcher Eric Sizemore struggled with the wind, which made hitting the strike zone a challenge. Greg Franzen and Chris Paquin started the game with back-to-back doubles. Mike Myers then singled home Chris and when Adam Cosby stepped to the plate he hit his first homerun of the season, a 2 run shot. 2 singles and a double later, the Mattseals put up 6 runs in the first inning. When the Mattseals came up to bat in the second inning, they picked up right where they left off. Chris Paquin hit his second homerun of the season and Jason Hewlett hit his first homerun of the season, both 2 run shots and the Seals put up 5 more runs in the second inning. Arvie Coffman again managed to get the lone hit for King Friday. Anthony Coffman and Joe Markos each took a walk in this game. This was all the run support starting pitcher Jason Hewlett needed as he shut down King Friday 11-0 in a three inning mercy game.

Although King Friday went scoreless in this 2 game series they really have a lot of potential. The wind was a big factor today for two developing pitchers in Tristan Birotte and Eric Sizemore. The father-son combination of Arvie and Anthony Coffman is a welcomed addition to this league about what the backyard game of wiffleball is all about. The Coffmans both played out in the field with Anthony in left and Arvie in right. Joe Markos made some nice catches out in centerfield and is showing promise as a young fielder. Captain Richard Hurd is doing a great job in keeping his guys motivated and having fun. They never appeared frustrated and were laughing and joking during the games. They were a great team to host at “The Club” and showed great sportsmanship through it all. I look forward to seeing them improve and hope they stay an active part of the league for many years to come. - Greg Franzen

Game 1: Coming off their sweep of King Friday, the Mattseals were ready for the Campus Commandos to pay them a visit to “The Club.” The Seals again wasted no time in getting out to an early lead. Commandos pitcher Danny Egan struggled to find the strike zone in the high wind conditions and walked 5 batters in the first inning. A couple timely singles and a 2 run sacrifice fly by Greg Franzen helped the Seals put up 4 runs in the first inning. The Seals pitcher, Adam Cosby, threw a good game and was rolling until the 4th inning when the Commandos got on the board with a 2 run homer by Daniel Egan. Adam Grant and Chris Roszell managed to get hits as well. However, Cosby stayed composed on the mound and didn’t let that homerun shake his confidence and those 4 runs in the first made all the difference in this game as the Seals held on for a 4-2 win, their third straight of the season.

After playing three straight games on the same day, the Seals were ready to take one more and go home happy with 4 wins under their belt. The Seals again jumped out to an early lead. After a lead off double in the first by Greg Franzen, three walks later scored a run and had the bases loaded for Greg Franzen as he got his first homerun of the season, a grand slam to left center. Following the homerun, back-to-back singles by Chris Paquin and Mike Myers set up some controversy for Jason Hewlett. After debating whether a ball was fair or foul, the Seals agreed to do the play over and Jason Hewlett hit his second homerun of the season, or did he? A second debate occurred on the field as to whether or not the ball hooked foul before or after the left field foul pole. After more debating the Seals agreed to call the ball foul and Hewlett stepped back up to the plate. This time, on the next pitch, he got vindication and hit a no doubt homerun over the left centerfield fence plating three RBI’s. After plating 8 runs in the first inning, the Commandos fought back with 4 runs in the top of the second off of starter Chris Paquin by Daniel Egan and Alex Linebrink. The Seals got one of the runs back in the bottom of the second with a fielder’s choice RBI by Adam Cosby and this was all the scoring from this game as the Seals held on to win their fourth straight with a 9-4 victory.

The Commandos and Seals joked around and had a great time, even finding time to play a quick scrimmage game after their series ended. It was fun to host the Commandos at “The Club.” Although we aren’t scheduled to play them again this season, we look forward to playing them again and hopefully making a visit to LaFayette Park next season. - Greg Franzen
