Gameday 4/27: Belgian Wiffles @ Flying Squirrels

4:00 PM            Chestnut Field            Woodhaven, MI
(0 - 2)
12 Game 1 16
(2 - 0)
 LP: N. Braden (0-1)
 HR: Strojny (1)
WP: Doby (1-0)
HR: Sharlow (1)
0 Game 2 2
 LP: Farkas (0-1) 18 innings WP: B. D'Agnese (1-0)
HR: Adams (1)
Line on the Series:  Series Result: BW sweep, FS sweep, split

Preview: It was a strong showing by Belgian in the preseason: finishing second in both tournaments to the tune of a 7-4 overall record. Quoted from their facebook page: "The bad? 1-4 vs. El Diablos. The good? 7-0 vs. everyone else," and that bad is even better than everyone else.

Preview: Hey! Another Garcia team gets in on the action! When said that Sessions put together a near perfect roster of rookies and vets it was meant on paper, against the cap. After finishing third in both satellite tournaments it looks like that is carrying over to the field as well.

Gameday 4/26: Holy Balls / El Diablos @ Wolfpack

2:00 PM            Jason Matt Memorial Field            Trenton, MI
(0 - 2)
7 Game 1 11
(2 - 2)
LP: Pearson (0-1) WP: Dancza (1-0)
5 Game 2 6
 LP: D. Braden (0-1)
 HR: D. Braden (1)
10 innings WP: M. Brannan (1-0)
Line on the Series:  Total Runs Scored: O/U 22.5  -  OVER

Preview: The preseason was rough for the Holy Balls, who came out of it with a 3-7 record. They could never get all the facets of their game to sync: when their bats were going, pitching struggled; when their pitching was strong, their bats went silent. Two of their best games were the two 1-run victories over the Wolfpack in Satty #1, however, due to the offense clicking on (virtually) all cylinders. Expect these games to be shootouts, even though the deep left field dimensions may limit the Balls home run numbers. While early season wins are always important, seeing consistent play out of the lineup may be the true benchmark here.

Preview: The Wolfpack are the only team to own a forfeit in the preseason: a respectable one earned by the overdrinking of an Amish man. With that it's hard to get much of a read on the team, even though today's lineup will be similar to the one appearing in Satty #1. They built J. Matt Memorial to play to lefty Mark Brannan's swing. The short porch in right field will be their advantage in this series, while they look for that one spark to flip the script of those 1-run losses to the Balls suffered in March.

With that it's hard to get much of a read on the team, even though today's lineup will be similar to the one appearing in Satty #1. They built J. Matt Memorial to play to lefty Mark Brannan's swing. However, El Diablos will take advantage of that short porch. Wolfpack's keys to squeaking out victory will have to be good old-fashioned patience and mistake free ball. You have to let El Diablos beat themselves.

Gameday 4/25: King Friday @ Islanders

6:00 PM            The Island            Detroit, MI
(1 - 1)
15 Game 1 1
(1 - 1)
 WP: M. Constanti (1-0)
HR: Castle (1,2,3); Constanti (1)
LP: Mundel (0-1)
HR: Benedetto (1)
3 Game 2 4
 Castle (0-1)
 HR: Castle (4)
Linebrink (1-0)
Line on the Series:  Series Result: KF sweep, IS sweep, split

Preview: King Friday had a rough go in Satty 2 when Castle wasn't on the mound, but don't expect play like that carry over into the season. Only two of those players - Castle and Milanovich - made it on the final roster, which is split 3-3 between rookies and WSEM veterans. The number two pitcher issue has been solved with the addition of Mike Constanti (1-0 on opening night), who is likely to start game 1. Castle looks to be the big bat in the lineup for now. There are two key storylines to this series for Friday. 1) Seeing how well the rookies take to the game, and 2) seeing how far this Friday team is from what it was a month ago.

Beat Report: Yarrr!!!! A series SPLIT - 1 Win for The Islanders & 1 Win for King Friday!! Ahoy! It was a blusterin' openin' day as th' me Islanders hosted th' Kin's 'o Friday. th' first battle was a mystery 'o epic proportions. me best bucko, William Mundel, was th' favorite to pr'vail as he took to th' mound vs a Marauder Mike Constanti. After our first at-bat it looked jolly fer me Islanders too: Newcomer Pete Benedeto hit a towerin' lead-off home run to left. But call it the seven seas or call it fate, Mundel did not have his usual stuff. After 4 innin's 'o merciless poundin' 'o his pitches, me Islanders were mercy'd 15-1.
But remember: revenge be sweet as blood! In th' battle 2 that me buckos were expected to lose, barnacle-covered cap'n Linebrink was able to hold them pesky Fridays to 3 runs (while me buckos scored 4) to win th' battle 'o wits. 'n so we split th' lovely booty on Openin' nightfall at th' Island.
If ye be still listenin', listen to 'tis: me bucko Mundel won't be so nice next the hour. harrharr!
