Gameday 4/27: King Friday @ El Diablos; Holy Balls @ Ducks

10 AM     Pervis Memorial     Southgate, MI
(0 - 2)
0 Game 1 2
(2 - 0)
LP: Mi. Myers (0-1) WP: Skinner (1-0)
HR: Skinner (1)
0 Game 2 15
 LP: Murtha (0-1) WP: C. Phillips (1-0)
HR: Skinner (2, 3, 4),
C. Phillips (1), M. Phillips (1),
Tomlinson (1)
P★   Skinner (EL) H★   Skinner (EL) F★   C. Coffee (KF)

El Diablos Informe: Game 1 was a pitchers duel between Skinner and Mike Myers and saw a 2-0 victory for el Diablos thanks to and RBI single from Tomlinson and a solo shot from Skinner. Unfortunately for King Friday and Murtha, Game 2 saw a lot more action. Everyone for el Diablos went deep. Skinner tacked on home runs 2, 3, and 4 while Mark Phillips hit his first career home run and grand slam.

King Friday Beat: Game 1 was the all Skinner show with him pitching a shutout and going 5 for 5. King Friday gets a good outting from mike myers and keep it close. Game 2 was all new faces, same old story for King Friday. Murtha served up more grand slams than Denny's as Friday gets mercied in 2 innings.

6 PM     The Swamp     Trenton, MI
(1 - 1)
3 Game 1 7
(1 - 1)
LP: Corbett (0-1) WP: Pearson (1-0)
HR: Pearson (1, 2), Constanti (1)
2 Game 2 0
 WP: Paquin (1-0)

LP: Constanti (0-1)
P★   Paquin (HB) H★   Pearson (DU) F★   Bullard (HB)

Holy Balls Beat: To no one's surprise the Swamp was built in a completely new fashion, with batters hitting to the north instead of southwest as had been slated. Annoyances with how the Ducks handle such league matters aside, the Balls jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in game one. Two two-run home runs off the bat of Pearson erased that lead, and he caught fire on the mound - shutting the Balls down after the first inning. Game 2 similarly saw a pitcher running the show. Paquin shut out the high-powered Ducks lineup, and helped out his cause with a two-run double in the third: the only runs of the game. Going on the road and splitting with one of the better teams in WSEM is a good start to the season.

Ducks Beat: "Yaaaaaaaaaaaaay"... "Dammit."

Gameday: 4/26 - Belgian Wiffles @ Islanders

6 PM     The Island     Detroit, MI

10 Game 2 7
WP: Matt (1-0) Probable Starters LP: Egan (0-1)
H★   Hollister (BW) H★   Hewlett (IS) F★   G. Brannan (BW)

Game 1 Video:
Islanders Beat: The much anticipated "Island" didn't fail to live up to expectations! The ball wasn't exactly flying, but the Islanders' skull & crossbones flag was! A steady wind made pitching a little tough for both teams, with multiple runs being walked in during each game. But even that brisk breeze didn't stop Nick Coffee from showing all as he streaked across the field during a David Buhr at bat. The gravel field played true, and led to great opening series with back-and-forth excitement. Stay tuned to see if suggestions are taken to put the Pirate flag in play during the next series at the Island!

Belgian Beat: "Total team effort" . . . That was Belgian's pumped up motto after Friday's wins against the Islanders. And it was a total team effort- Buhr outpitched Linebrink in Game 1 along with some stellar defensive plays in both games by Ryan Alexia, Greg Brannan, and Jason Hollister, Jason Matt came in to Game 2 on fire and ready to play going 2-4 knocking in some key runs helping his pitching performance, Dougie W. and Matty D. showed they could see the ball at the plate with Dougie walking 4 times and going 1-2 and though Matty D. was 1-6, he only struck out once. Mark Brannan had a great day at the plate as well as a load 'em up, shut 'em down 1st inning pitched. Mark also had a huge day at the plate going 3-6 with a couple RBI and a couple walks. Total team effort.

Captains Interviews

This season Carl is spearheading a series of six-minute interviews with the captains of all eight teams. It is an opportunity to hear their take on their roster and what aspirations they have for the season straight from their mouth. The audio from the interviews is paired up with photos of some of the things they are talking about and uploaded to the WSEM Media youtube channel. Future installments will be done as we head into the season and added to this post.

Satellite Tournament #2: Gameday

Thanks to the Belgian Wiffles, Ducks, El Diablos, Holy Balls, Islanders, and King Friday for coming out to the Holy Grounds and braving the elements to make the second satellite tournament a success. The wind gave batters lots of opportunities to pose and made it a rough experience for pitchers, who struggled to find any semblance of command. But congratulations to the Ducks, whose pitchers - Constanti and Pearson - showed no struggles with the wind and helped the team bounce back from their 0-2 performance last tournament and win this one in undefeated fashion! Hats off, but all other clothes on and layered.
